Pet abandonment skyrockets. Storm floods our shelter. Please help.

Abandoned dogs are pouring through our doors. It started when lockdown level 3 came into effect. At the end of last week our shelter unit reached capacity. We can’t keep up and now the storm flooded this lifesaving facility.

Please could you make a donation to help us look after these abandoned pets this winter.

On Tuesday a homeless mommy dog was found behind the Khayelitsha braai stands. She had just given birth to three puppies in the cold and rain. We brought them to Mdzananda and named the mom Hazel.

Hazel and her pups received medical care, a warm bed to sleep and nutritious food. They are safe now.

In that same week we received more abandoned pets. A mom with nine puppies. Another mom with ten puppies. A very old dog. An emaciated dog. To name a few.

It costs us around R1500 to care for an abandoned pet in its first month with us. Many stay much much longer. With the numbers pouring in and our facility flooding in the storm, they have all been moved into our hospital. They will stay there until the water dries up, but our hospital is just as full. In winter our pet cases increase - we see more pets with hypothermia and pets with broken bones from reckless drivers knocking them over in bad weather. Our expenses increase in winter but, with the unexpected abandonments, it is even higher. We did not budget for this and your gift today will be a lifeline.
